This past summer, the Mattel toy company created six Barbie dolls to honor a group of women who worked tirelessly to help their communities during the Covid-19 pandemic. The toys were designed to highlight the heroic efforts of these frontline workers.

Sarah Gilbert, the scientist who led the development of the Covid-19 vaccine for the University of Oxford and the company AstraZeneca, hopes the dolls will inspire more girls to explore careers in STEM—science, technology, engineering, and math. “I think introducing girls to different career paths that they may choose to follow can help increase the number of women working in STEM,” she says.
